GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STANDARD (GOTS)
The aim of GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STANDARDS (GOTS) is to define requirements to ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.
Organic cotton and organic textile are high in demand. This demands stems from increased consumer awareness that conventional cotton uses large quantities of chemicals pesticides and fertilizers to grow and harsh and toxic chemicals to process, resulting in environmental pollution and ill effects on human health.
The pesticides used on ‘conventional’ cotton increasingly create threat to mankind and environment. Conventionally-grown cotton occupies hardly 3% of the world’s farmland, but uses more than 25% of the world’s harmful chemical fertilizers and pesticides. And these harmful chemicals get absorbed into the plant, air, soil, water and eventually, our bodies. Thus it imbalances the ecological system.
But on the contrary, organic cotton is grown by using natural/organic fertilizers by enhanced natural farm management system like crop rotation method to improve the fertility of the soil. And second most important thing is that organic cotton is endorsed by third neutral independent body that ensures the buyer that what you are buying is organic and been grown as per the international standard. So by supporting the concept of organic cotton you not only support a man kind but also contribute a lot to the environment.
GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STATDARDS for organic textiles cover the production, processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, exportation, importation and distribution of all natural fibers. The final products may include, but are not limited to fiber products, yarns, fabrics and clothes.
The criteria of GOTS certification is that only natural fibers that are certified organic and fibers from conversion period certified according to recognised international or national standards and certified by any IFOAM accredited or internationally recognised (according to ISO 65) certifier can be used. After that complete processing of organic textile must be as per standards of GOTS.
